Twelve Hoops is a work of intellectual fiction by Ukrainian writer and poet Yurii Andrukhovych. The story unfolds against the backdrop of post-Soviet chaos, in which eight reality-frightened people are lost. They try to understand their nature and purpose but are afraid to take a step towards self-discovery. However, everything will change with their appearance in a forgotten hotel... In the context of the multi-layered narrative, the author speaks about the preservation of historical memory, the complexity of existential searches, and the dualism of life and death.
The novel clearly demonstrates the author's use of a number of complex artistic techniques. Allegorical and metaphorical images are subtly intertwined with symbolism and grotesque, merging with the specific cultural topos of mythopoetics. Yurii Andrukhovych not only imbues his work with the artistic visions of Bohdan-Ihor Antonych but also embodies the majestic figure of the poet in one of the main characters of the book.
