Italian politician, philosopher, historian, writer, poet, and playwright Niccolò Machiavelli (1469—1527) gained particular fame for his renowned work "The Prince" (1513), in which he attempted to formulate general laws of political life, articulate the essence of the "statesman's craft," and define the role and place of a ruler in 16th-century Europe and Italy. Today, these issues have gained extraordinary acuity and relevance. The edition also includes N. Machiavelli's "History of Florence" (1520—1526), published posthumously (1532), which reconstructs the city's history from Ancient Rome to the death of Lorenzo de' Medici in 1492.
