Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at a local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summers meets a quiet woman, Josie Fair. It turns out that Josie is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday. A few days later, their paths cross again. After listening to Alix's podcasts, Josie decides she could interest listeners with her story, and says she is on the cusp of big changes.

Josie's life seems strange and complicated, and although Alix is unnerved by her subject's behavior, she cannot resist the temptation to continue the podcast. Gradually, she realizes that Josie is hiding very dark stories. But Josie has already infiltrated Alix's life—and her home. However, the woman disappears as suddenly as she appeared. Only then does Alix learn that Josie has left something terrifying behind, and realizes that she herself has become the subject of her own true-crime podcast. Her and her family are in mortal danger.
