The heroine's maturation coincides with a turbulent period for the peninsula – from the 1990s until the occupation. To open Crimea up to Ukraine – that is the author's goal. The childhood and youth of her main character are spent on the peninsula. It is there, in a motley national mix, resisting the influence of total Russification, that she realizes: I am Ukrainian.
