Aspiring architect Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales — since childhood, she has been plagued by visions of the Fairy King. On her desk, there is always a tattered copy of "Angharad" — Emrys Myrddin's epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King and then destroys him. So when the writer's family announces a competition to redesign his estate, Effy knows this is her chance.

However, Hiraeth Manor is old and musty, and its inhabitants are suspicious and unfriendly. Preston Hilario, a young literary scholar determined to prove Myrddin a fraud, also adds to her troubles. While the rivals painstakingly gather information about the enigmatic writer's legacy, dark forces conspire against them. They will have to work together to uncover Myrddin's secret and save themselves.
