In love, we learn who we want to be. In war, we learn who we are...
France is engulfed in the flames of World War II. Large cities and small villages are occupied by Nazis, enemy planes fill the sky, and despair, death, and suffering abound.
Vianne Mauriac is a village schoolteacher who sent her husband off to war and is forced to make incredible efforts every day to save her family: surviving without food or money, sharing a roof with the enemy, enduring inhumane suffering. Her eighteen-year-old sister Isabelle joins the partisan Resistance movement. Together with like-minded individuals, she believes that France will endure and sooner or later defeat the enemy. While thousands of French people submit to the enemy and try to adapt to the grim circumstances, the fragile girl, hunted by the Wehrmacht and SS, becomes an elusive guide who saves dozens of military pilots, transporting them along a secret route through the Pyrenees.
Vianne and Isabelle are very different, and in this war, each has her own path and her own feat.
