The Family Upstairs is a psychological thriller with elements of detective fiction and family drama.

Shortly after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find a letter she's been waiting for her whole life. As she opens the envelope, she thinks one thing: "Finally, I'll find out who I am." Soon, she discovers not only who her biological parents were, but also that she is the sole heir to their abandoned estate on the banks of the Thames in fashionable Chelsea, London. Twenty-five years ago, the police received a report of a baby crying at 16 Cheyne Walk. Upon arrival, officers found a healthy ten-month-old infant happily cooing in a bassinet in the bedroom. Downstairs, in the kitchen, lay three dead bodies dressed in black, alongside a hastily scrawled note. Four children, who had reportedly lived at Cheyne Walk according to the media, were missing.
