Joe finds her name on Google. From Beck's constant stream of tweets and posts, he learns everything about her: where she studied, who her friends are, which favorite bar she gets drunk at, and what parties she attends. Joe will be the perfect match for her: a guy who always coincidentally happens to be nearby. The young man will possess Guinevere slowly, removing all obstacles in his path. And it doesn't matter if these are people or circumstances.

Joe is convinced that it's mutual. Beck's friendliness is definitely a signal of a desire to meet, the extended credit card with her name and surname is a request for stalking, and one favorite book between them is a serious reason to gradually insinuate himself into Beck's life and change it however Joe pleases. To emphasize the creepiness of the situation, Kepnes presents the plot from Joe's perspective: it's the fact that he immediately starts mentally addressing Beck as "you" in constant internal monologues, which don't require answers from his interlocutor, that gives the series its title.

Joe is not a cardboard villain who pops out from behind a street corner and kills after the first date. With his performance of friendliness, intellect, and chance encounters, he gradually lures his victim into a trap: it is in this credibility of each of Goldberg's actions that the most terrifying part of the story lies.
