A mother's heart will never accept loss, especially not indifference from those around her. Even her husband has repeatedly hinted at the need to move on. But Isabel doesn't have a moment's peace and suffers from insomnia – she yearns to find her son alive, or at least to know what happened to him.

Trying to give the story maximum publicity, Isabel Drake publicly tells it at true-crime fan conventions, where podcaster Waylon Spencer becomes interested in her. Together they begin an investigation, but Waylon has his own motives... Isabel gradually begins to have doubts as forgotten memories from the distant past surface. It also becomes clear that Mason's disappearance is not the only tangle of mysteries they need to unravel.

The book is written from Isabel Drake's perspective. It alternates between the present day and the protagonist's childhood in 1999. A tragedy also occurred in her family then, which allows the reader to understand Izzy's inner fears and emotional experiences. The past gradually intertwines with the present, making Isabel doubt her memory and her own actions.
